Dangerous Goods Containers Overview

Dangerous goods (DG) containers are purpose-built for the on-site storage of flammable liquids, oxidising agents, corrosives, toxic substances, and other regulated materials covered by the Australian Dangerous Goods Code (ADG 7.9). They’re not standard containers with stickers on them. Every unit is engineered, fitted, and certified specifically for the storage class it’s rated for – and that certification is what stops your DG store becoming a liability the moment WorkSafe, the EPA, or your insurer asks to see paperwork.

Our DG containers are built in Perth against AS 1940 (flammable and combustible liquids), AS 4326 (corrosives), AS 3780 (toxic substances), and AS 4332 (gases) as applicable to the storage class. The standard build includes a sealed, fully bunded steel floor capable of containing 110% of the maximum stored volume – so if a 200L drum splits open, the spill is contained, not draining onto your site. Cross-flow passive ventilation is engineered to spec, with intake vents low and exhaust vents high, sized for the air-change rate required by the relevant standard. Wall and ceiling construction is fire-rated where the storage class requires it.

The compliance package is what matters most. Every unit ships with engineer-signed drawings, a compliance certificate against the relevant AS standard, all mandatory hazard signage (UN class diamonds, no-smoking, no-ignition, emergency contact), and an MSDS folder mounted inside. For storage of larger volumes triggering placarding obligations, we supply the full set of external placards rated to the substances being stored.

For mining and heavy-industrial customers, we build configurations specific to your storage profile – segregated cells for incompatible classes (acids and bases, oxidisers and flammables), shelving systems sized for IBCs or 200L drums, integrated fire suppression where required, and emergency shower/eye-wash stations on adjacent skids.

Common Applications

Flammable Liquid Storage (Class 3)

Petrol, diesel, kerosene, solvents, paints, and thinners. AS 1940-compliant builds with bunded floors and engineered ventilation.

Corrosive Storage (Class 8)

Acids, alkalis, and caustic substances. AS 4326-compliant with chemical-resistant linings, drainage management, and segregated bunding for incompatible substances.

Oxidising Agents (Class 5.1)

Peroxides, nitrates, and oxidisers requiring fire-isolated storage. Built to specific separation distances and ventilation rates.

Toxic Substances (Class 6)

Pesticides, herbicides, agricultural chemicals, and industrial toxics. AS 3780-compliant storage with restricted-access locking and ventilation engineered for vapour management.

Gas Cylinder Storage (Class 2)

LPG, oxygen, acetylene, and compressed gases. AS 4332-compliant with mesh ventilation, cylinder restraints, and segregation of incompatible gases.

Mining Explosives Magazines

Detonator and explosives storage to AS 2187, including ANFO storage. Built to mine site standards with WA Police licensing support.

Workshop & Trade Storage

Mobile mechanic, civil contractor, and farm storage for fuels, oils, and chemicals where on-site DG storage is part of normal operations.

Pesticide & Agricultural Chemical Stores

Farm-scale storage for restricted pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides with separated cells for incompatible products.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Australian Dangerous Goods Code (currently ADG 7.9) is the regulatory framework that governs how dangerous goods are classified, packaged, transported, and stored in Australia. State-level workplace health and safety regulations (in WA, the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2022) require that any quantity of dangerous goods stored on a workplace site complies with the applicable Australian Standards – AS 1940, AS 4326, AS 3780, or others depending on the class. Our containers are engineered and certified to those standards, with paperwork to prove it.
Possibly. Manifest quantities (the trigger thresholds requiring full DG storage) vary by substance – for diesel it’s 1,000L, for petrol it’s 250L, for flammable solvents it’s 250L, for corrosives it depends on packing group. Below manifest quantities you still need to comply with general WHS obligations but may not need a fully certified DG container. Above them, you do. We can walk you through the thresholds for your storage profile.
Only if the classes are compatible – and many aren’t. Acids and bases must be separated. Flammables and oxidisers must be separated. Toxics and food-grade products must be separated. For mixed storage we typically supply multi-cell containers with internal walls and separate bunding for each cell. We’ll design the configuration to suit what you’re storing.
A bund is a sealed containment area that holds spills. For flammable liquids, AS 1940 requires the bund to hold at least 25% of the total stored volume, or 110% of the largest single container – whichever is greater. Our standard bunds are sized generously to handle worst-case spills with margin.
For most flammable liquid and chemical storage, passive cross-flow ventilation is sufficient and is what we build to standard. For volatile substances, gas storage, or where vapour management drives the design, mechanical (forced) ventilation with explosion-rated fans is available – quote on application.
Yes – many of our DG containers are deployed across WA mine sites for diesel, oil, chemical, and reagent storage. We build to mine site safety standards (DMIRS regulations) where required, and supply MSDS-compatible documentation, fire response procedures, and emergency contact signage to spec.
Usually yes, especially for larger storage volumes. WA’s DMIRS, local council, fire authorities, and potentially the EPA may all have interest depending on quantities, classes, and site location. We supply the engineering documentation required for approval submissions – your consultant or compliance officer handles the regulatory interface.
Structurally, 20–30+ years like any container. Compliance is what drives replacement – if standards change or your storage profile changes, the container may need re-certification or modification. Routine inspection is recommended annually; replacement of seals, bund integrity testing, and ventilation servicing is part of standard maintenance.
For short-term projects, mining mobilisation, or project-specific storage, hire makes sense. For permanent DG storage at an established facility, purchase is usually cheaper over 18–24 months. DG hire runs from $22/day on a 20ft and includes compliance documentation refresh annually.
We supply standard signage, MSDS holders, and emergency contact information. Site-specific operational procedures, staff training, and emergency response planning are the responsibility of the operator – but we can refer you to qualified DG consultants who handle that side.
