Side Opening Containers Overview

A side opening container – sometimes called a side-loader or full-side-access container – looks like a standard container from the outside but with one critical difference: the entire long side wall opens via multiple double-doored bays, giving you full-length access for forklift loading, machinery deployment, and equipment storage that won’t fit through standard rear doors.

This is the container construction sites, hire fleets, and trade businesses choose when they need to load and unload from the side. Standard rear doors give you a single 2.34m × 2.28m opening – workable for boxes and pallets, hopeless for long machinery, vehicles parked broadside, or anything you need to grab from the middle of the container without unloading everything in front of it. A side opening removes that constraint completely.

The construction is identical to a standard container – Corten steel walls, marine plywood floor, full structural integrity, ISO-stackable – with the long-side walls replaced by typically four sets of double doors (a 20ft) or eight sets (a 40ft). Each pair is independently lockable, weather-sealed, and hung on reinforced hinges rated for repeated daily use. The rear doors remain as standard so you keep the option of end-loading for long items.

For fleet operators, hire businesses, and construction crews who load and unload daily, the side opening container pays for itself in saved labour. Drop the truck against any bay, grab what you need, lock up and move on. No rearranging, no double-handling, no shuffling pallets to get to the one at the back.

Common Applications

Construction Site Tool & Plant Storage

Generators, compressors, scaffolding, formwork, hand tools, and consumables. Load from the side, retrieve any item without unloading anything else.

Vehicle & Machinery Storage

Quad bikes, skid steers, ride-on equipment, ATVs, and small plant. Drive in from the side, park, lock up.

Hire & Rental Fleet Yards

Equipment hire businesses use side-loaders as mobile storage that allows fast pick/return loading via forklift on busy yards.

Trade Workshops

Plumbers, electricians, civil contractors, and fabricators use them as mobile parts stores and tool cribs that can be relocated as project sites change.

Mining Service & Parts Stores

Remote-site parts inventory where forklift access from multiple angles speeds turnaround on equipment changeouts.

Agricultural Equipment Storage

Farm machinery, attachments, irrigation gear, fencing equipment, and tools. Side access works around how farms actually load and unload.

Event & Production Logistics

Lighting rigs, staging, AV gear, and event infrastructure that gets loaded and unloaded multiple times across an event run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Structurally side openings are reinforced to compensate for the removed wall – heavier corner posts, additional roof bracing, and reinforced floor cross-members. They’re CSC-rated for stacking and shipping when specified for marine use. For static yard storage they’re equivalent in strength to a standard container.
Yes – CSC-rated units stack to standard spec. We recommend keeping the doors closed and locked when stacking, and not stacking modified units (with windows or non-standard openings) without engineering advice.
Yes. Each pair of side doors has weather-strip seals and cam-lock bars that pull the doors tight against the frame. Maintained properly, side openings are wind-and-watertight for the life of the container. Worn seals are a standard replacement item every 5–10 years depending on use.
Yes – every pair has cam-lock bars accepting standard padlocks. Most operators also fit lock boxes (welded steel shrouds that prevent bolt-cutter attacks on padlocks) for high-value contents. We can supply and fit lock boxes at order time.
Yes. 40ft high cube side openings are common for vehicle storage and machinery applications where height matters. Ask us at quote time and we’ll confirm depot stock.
Roughly $3,000–$4,000 above a standard 20ft, and $4,000–$5,000 above a standard 40ft, reflecting the additional steelwork, hinges, seals, and door hardware. For operators who load daily, the productivity gain pays it back within months.
Technically yes, but it’s rarely cost-effective. A factory-built side opening starts with reinforced framing; retrofitting requires structural engineering, cutting, welding new sub-frames, and re-certification. By the time you’ve done it, you’ve usually spent more than a new side-opening container would have cost. We’ll discuss the math honestly if you ask.
Yes – side openings are popular hire units. Construction projects and trade businesses often hire them for the duration of a project, then return them. Hire rates run roughly 20–30% higher than standard containers.
