Container Domes Overview

A container dome is a covered, weatherproof shelter built on two parallel shipping containers as side walls, with a tensioned fabric or rigid steel roof spanning between them. It’s the most cost-effective way to put a large covered area on site fast – no concrete pad, no building permit complexity in many cases, no months of construction. The two containers do double duty as side walls and as workshops, offices, or storage at each end.

Container domes are standard infrastructure across Australian mining, agriculture, civil construction, and heavy industry. You’ll see them sheltering haul trucks at mine sites, covering hay and grain at farms, housing fleets of yellow goods at civil contractors, and serving as workshops at remote operations. The reasons are obvious – they cost a fraction of a steel-framed shed, they deploy in days rather than months, they can be relocated, and the container side walls give you secured storage built into the structure.

Our standard configurations use 20ft or 40ft containers as the side walls, set parallel at spans of 6m, 12m, or 18m+. The fabric cover is heavy-duty UV-resistant PVC (typically 600gsm or 900gsm depending on specification), tensioned over a steel truss frame anchored to the container roofs. Cyclone-rated builds for North-West WA use heavier truss spec, additional tie-downs, and reinforced fabric. End walls are optional – open-ended for drive-through access, partially enclosed for weather protection, or fully enclosed for security and climate control.

For mining operators, we supply container domes as fly-camp workshops, equipment shelters, and bulk storage for ore samples, parts, and consumables. For agriculture, the spans are typically 12m–18m for hay sheds, grain storage, and machinery shelter. For civil contractors, the most common deployment is a 6m span for vehicle and plant shelter at project depots.

Common Applications

Mining Equipment Shelter

Haul trucks, excavators, drill rigs, and ancillary equipment under cover during shift changes, maintenance, and Pilbara wet season operations.

Hay & Grain Storage

Agricultural bulk storage where weather protection matters more than full enclosure. UV-resistant covers keep stored product dry through extended seasonal storage.

Civil Contractor Plant Shelter

Project depot covered storage for yellow goods, attachments, and vehicles. Containers at each end give you tool storage and a site office built into the structure.

Workshop Extensions

Bolt-on covered work areas attached to existing buildings or container workshops. Gives you a weather-protected work bay for vehicle servicing or fabrication.

Helicopter & Aircraft Shelter

Light helicopter shelter at remote mining and pastoral operations. Span and height typically 12m × 4.5m apex for most light helicopters.

Storage of Bulk Materials

Aggregates, mulch, sand, fertiliser, and other bulk materials that need weather protection without full enclosure.

Event & Marquee Use

Long-term event infrastructure where a permanent marquee isn’t suitable. Used at racing complexes, agricultural shows, and large-event venues.

Remote Industrial Workshops

Mine site, exploration camp, and remote pastoral workshop facilities where speed of deployment and relocatability matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your council, your site zoning, and the intended use. For temporary structures (under 12 months) on rural and industrial-zoned land, approval is often not required. For permanent placement, commercial use, or residential areas, approval is typically required. We supply engineering documentation to support whatever approval pathway your site needs.
A 6m dome with the containers already on site takes 5–7 days. A 12m dome takes 7–10 days. Add 1–2 days if we’re supplying and positioning the containers as well. Cyclone-rated builds take slightly longer because of the heavier engineering and tie-down spec.
Not if installed correctly. Standard builds are rated to N3 (region B winds, suitable for most of WA south of the Tropic). Cyclone-rated builds (region D) use heavier fabric, additional tie-down ratchet straps, and reinforced truss spec – we deploy them across the Pilbara, Kimberley, and offshore island operations. Cover failure is almost always installation-related, not design-related.
8–12 years for 600gsm UV-rated PVC in Perth conditions. 12–15+ years for 900gsm with proper maintenance. The fabric is the wear item – when it eventually degrades you replace just the cover, not the whole structure. Replacement fabric runs 20–30% of the original dome cost.
Yes – that’s one of its core advantages. Disconnect the truss, fold the fabric, lift the containers onto trucks, deliver to the new site, re-erect. Relocation typically takes 5–10 days depending on size.
No. If you’ve already got two 20ft or 40ft containers on site, we can build the dome on top of them. We do need to inspect them first to confirm the roof structure is sound and they’re positioned correctly. Buying through us is usually easier because we deliver the containers in the right orientation and we know the dome spec they’re carrying.
Anything you want. Most clients fit them out – one as a site office, one as tool/parts storage. Some leave them empty for additional sheltered storage. The container interiors are entirely yours; the dome is what’s between and above them.
The containers themselves are fully secure (lockable cargo doors). The space under the dome is open – that’s the trade-off versus a fully enclosed shed. For applications where the under-dome area needs to be secured, we supply full or partial fabric end walls and side curtains.
The fabric cover isn’t insulated – that’s how dome shelters keep cost down and air circulating in hot conditions. For applications needing climate control, a steel-framed shed is the better answer. Container domes excel where weather protection matters more than thermal performance.
A 6m dome (no containers) starts around $6,800 supplied and installed. A 12m dome runs $11,500–$15,000. If we’re supplying the containers as well, add $3,500–$8,000 depending on size and condition. Site delivery and any engineering documentation specific to your location is itemised separately in the quote.
