40ft Standard Container Overview

The 40ft standard container doubles the capacity of a 20ft for substantially less than double the cost. Twelve metres of internal length, 67 cubic metres of weatherproof volume, and the same Corten steel construction that’s defined shipping containers for six decades.

For bulk storage and palletised cargo, the 40ft is the workhorse. Twenty Australian standard pallets fit on the floor; many products stack two-high in the standard internal height. For modifications and site office builds, the 40ft gives you usable space – a partitioned office with meeting room, a single-cubicle ablution block with shower, or a workshop with bench, tool storage, and floor space to roll a vehicle in.

The trade-off versus 40ft high cubes is straightforward: standards are 300mm shorter in height, cheaper, and lighter. For storage where height doesn’t matter, the standard 40ft delivers everything you need at lower cost. For modifications where ceiling height impacts usability, the high cube usually wins.

Premium Used ($3,950) are cargo-worthy 40ft units with light cosmetic wear. Structurally sound and weatherproof.

New 1-Trip ($5,650) are pristine factory-fresh 40ft containers. Standard recommendation for any modification project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Depends on use. For storage where height doesn’t matter: standard saves $250–$350. For modifications, vehicle storage with raised tops, or palletised goods stacked two-high: the high cube’s extra 300mm usually justifies the cost.
Most suburban driveways won’t take one – 12 metres of container plus the delivery truck length needs serious access. For acreage, semi-rural, or commercial properties, the 40ft is straightforward. For tight residential placement, recommend a 20ft.
Perth metro from $350 (vs $250 for a 20ft) – the slightly higher rate reflects truck access and handling. Regional WA priced per location. See full pricing.
Yes – tilt-trays are configured for 40ft containers. Total transport length around 16 metres including truck cab. Site access needs to accommodate that.
Yes – marine plywood floors are rated for forklift traffic across the load-bearing cross-members. Heavy point loads (concentrated single-tyre weight) need to be considered – we’ll advise on flooring upgrades for unusual load cases.
Volume-wise, a single 40ft (67m³) is slightly more than two 20ft (33m³ × 2 = 66m³). Cost-wise, one 40ft is significantly cheaper than two 20ft. Operationally, one container is one less to deliver, pad, and manage. Two 20ft only wins when you need separate compartments or split locations.
